WHEREAS, the Student Conservation Association (SCA) is celebrating 50 years of students conserving America; and
WHEREAS, the SCA is a nationwide conservation force of college and high school volunteers who protect America's parks, forests, and other public lands; and
WHEREAS, as the largest natural resource conservation organization in America, the SCA provides opportunities for over 3,000 people per year to work through internships and summer trail crews to positively impact the environment; and
WHEREAS, the SCA is devoted not only to conservation and important environmental work, but also to developing a new generation of community leaders by engaging young people in hands-on service to the land; and
WHEREAS, since it was established in 1957, the SCA has steadily expanded to all 50 states, developing urban programs and building partnerships with governmental agencies, environmental groups and conscientious corporations; and
WHEREAS, Chatham University will present The Rachel Carson Leadership Award to Elizabeth Cushman Titus Putman, the founding president of SCA.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh recognizes the importance of emphasizing environmental conservation, and commends the SCA and their volunteers for their positive impact on the community; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby declares October 25, 2007 "Student Conservation Association Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
