WHEREAS, May 14 is recognized as International Migratory Bird Day, a day on which students and scientists, bird watchers and other lovers of nature, strive to better understand one of the most important and beautiful aspects of bird life; and
WHEREAS, Brad Livezey, former Curator of Birds at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History and one of the world's foremost ornithologists, was tragically killed in a car accident last month, a loss not only to his family and friends but to the museum, to Pittsburgh, and to the scientific community; and
WHEREAS, Brad Livezey was considered the world's leading authority on bird osteology-the study of skeletal structure-as well an expert on waterfowl and the historical loss of flight among some species of birds; and
WHEREAS, the foundational work Brad Livezey conducted will serve as a keystone for future generations of ornithologists and his reputation as one of the most conscientious scientists in his field will provide a high threshold to meet; and
WHEREAS, Brad Livezey's love for and dedication to his work, and his many achievements over the years have helped solidify Pittsburgh's reputation as a world-class center for life-science research.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby honor the contributions and achievements of Brad Livezey; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare May 14, 2011 "Brad Livezey Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
