WHEREAS, construction of the Glen Hazel Highrise was completed in September 1975 and has since provided affordable housing to aging and disabled households; and,
WHEREAS, prior to 1975, the site was used as temporary housing for defense industry workers during World War II, and,
WHEREAS, the Housing Authority of the City of Pittsburgh purchased the property in 1952 and converted it to low-income housing, gradually replacing the wartime housing with new housing through the 1970s; and,
WHEREAS, in 1992, the building was renamed to honor Bernice Crawley, founder of the Metropolitan Tenants Organization, where she represented tenants of the city and county housing authorities; and,
WHEREAS, currently, the 97-unit highrise is home to dozens of City of Pittsburgh residents, with many residents serving as dedicated members of the Glen Hazel Highrise Tenant Council; and,
WHEREAS, the current Tenant Council is the first that the property has seen under the RAD ownership structure and is a success due to the collaboration between the Housing Authority, residents, and TREK, the property management company.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby congratulate Bernice Crawley Highrise on its 50th Anniversary and commends the level of personal investment and commitment as exhibited by members of the Glen Hazel Highrise Tenant Council and all long-time Highrise residents.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Friday, September 26th, 2025, to be “Glen Hazel Bernice Crawley Highrise Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
