WHEREAS, in 1967, the Carnegie Institute of Technology, founded by Andrew Carnegie, and the Mellon Institute of Industrial Research, founded by Andrew and Richard Mellon, merged to form Carnegie Mellon University (CMU); and,
WHEREAS, CMU is consistently ranked among the top universities in the nation across a diverse array of fields of study, including engineering, drama, the arts, robotics, computer sciences, information technology, public affairs, and more; and,
WHEREAS, the work and research completed by CMU alumni, faculty, and students have led to transformative and lifesaving discoveries, including the first WI-FI network, artificial intelligence, Kevlar vests, organ matching algorithms, autonomous vehicle technology, Java computer programming, ReCAPTCHA software, GigaPan panoramic photography, master scheduling for professional sports, the hashtag, and the first Emoticon; and,
WHEREAS, the legacy of CMU's Fine Arts includes the renowned artist Andy Warhol, acclaimed actor Billy Porter, 114 Emmy Award recipients, 43 Tony Award recipients, 7 Academy Award recipients, and other artists and performers of countless mediums and disciplines; and,
WHEREAS, the City of Pittsburgh and CMU continue to collaborate on several projects to build a more efficient and accountable City government, create safer and less congested streets for all users, address 21st century challenges, improve the lives of Pittsburgh residents across all 90 neighborhoods, and build a city for all; and,
WHEREAS, CMU graduates have contributed and continue to contribute to Pittsburgh, the nation, and the world as inventors, technologists, artists, engineers, and public servants serving in city, county, state, and federal governments; and,
WHEREAS, over the last 50 years, CMU's campus footprint has expanded rapidly across the Oakland, Squirrel Hill, and Shadyside communities, other sections of Pittsburgh, cities across the United States, and countries around the world; and,
