WHEREAS, the Diocese of Pittsburgh is the fourth largest school district in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and Catholic Schools of the Diocese of Pittsburgh have served Western Pennsylvania since 1828; and,
WHEREAS, the Diocese of Pittsburgh, celebrates National Catholic Schools Week Sunday, January 25 through Saturday, January 31, 2015 with the theme of "Communities of Faith, Knowledge, and Service", which embraces the heart of Catholic education; and,
WHEREAS, schools are small communities who are members of the larger community of home, church, city and nation; and faith, knowledge and service are three measures by which any Catholic school can and should be judged; and,
WHEREAS, Catholic Schools across the City of Pittsburgh observe the week with Masses, open house and other activities for students, families, parishioners and community members focusing on the value Catholic education provides to young people and its contributions to our church, our communities and our nation; and,
WHEREAS, in addition to the academics, Catholic Schools add strong moral values and a high level of service to local communities because of the many service projects students undertake as part of their curriculum; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend the Diocese of Pittsburgh for continuing to have a reputation for academic excellence and instilling spiritual values in their students; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare the week of Sunday, January 25 through Saturday, January 31, 2015 to be "Catholic Schools Week" in the City of Pittsburgh.
