Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend William Geisler for his dedication and commitment to protecting and serving the United States of America.

WHEREAS, Saturday, February 19th marked the 60th Anniversary of some 800 Navy ships with over 70,000 Marines stormed the island of Iwo Jima, site of the deadliest battle in Marine Corps history; and,
 
WHEREAS, at two minutes after 9 on the morning of February 19, 1945, four regiments landed abreast across those volcanic sandy beaches and in just a few minutes, 6,000 Marines were ashore; and
 
WHEREAS, in 36 days, one out of every three Marines would be wounded upholding the war-fighting excellence of the U.S. Marine Corps.  In all, about 24,000 Marines and sailors were wounded and at least 6,100 died; and
 
WHEREAS, Private First Class William Geisler, D Battery, 13th Regiment, Fifth Marine Division, who hit the beach in that first wave of Marines is a survivor of Iwo Jima; and,
 
WHEREAS, PFC William Geisler was promoted to the rank of Corporal, and proudly served his Country until his honorable discharge in April of 1946.  He returned to Morningside and in 1956, married the former Mary Wehley of Troy Hill. They remained happily married for forty years until her passing in June of 1996.
