Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh, does hereby recognize and commend the Pittsburgh Urban League Guild for providing invaluable services to many thousands of people in all stages of life over the last half century.

Whereas, the Pittsburgh Urban League Guild will be celebrating their 50th Anniversary on July 17th, 2004 at the Rivers Club, the theme is The Harlem Renaissance Comes to the Rivers Club; and    
 
Whereas, the Guild, now under the leadership of President Deborah L. Walker, is a volunteer organization promoting community service and financial support for the Urban League of Pittsburgh; and
 
Whereas, the Guild strives to help educate Pittsburgh's children and prepare them for happy adulthood by working with the Urban League Charter School and the Duquesne Community Mobilization Project. The Guild also developed a reading program for young ladies in the 7th and 8th grade entitled "Tea and Read", a program that assists youth with developing and improving their reading skills; and
 
Whereas, the Pittsburgh Urban League Guild has focused attention on fulfilling the needs of the elderly by assisting the Lemington Center Elder Care Nursing Facility, an institution that preserves both the physical health and the dignity of its patients.  The Guild also worked with Alma Illery Medical Center to create "Young Mother Helpers", a program that provides mentors for first time mothers under the age of 25 who help the young women adjust to their new and vitally important role as a mother.
