Title: NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh commends, acknowledges, and remembers Albert Fondy for his years of work and his support for and dedication to Labor and Education in the Pittsburgh Public School System and the City of Pittsburgh. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that September 18, 2005, be hereby declared "Al Fondy Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Albert Fondy served as President of the 4000-member Pittsburgh Federation of Teachers (PFT) since May 1967. He was elected fifteen times by the PFT membership over a span of thirty-seven years and was full-time president of the PFT since early 1968; and

WHEREAS, prior to his election as PFT President, Al Fondy taught high school mathematics for eight and a half years, all but one of those years at Carrick High School in Pittsburgh; and

Whereas, Al Fondy led the PFT to a collective bargaining election victory in a vote among 3800 teachers and other professionals in the Pittsburgh Public Schools, following an eleven-day representation/election strike which took place from February 29 through March 10, 1968; and

WHEREAS, Al Fondy played a significant role in the passage and implementation of Act 195, the PA Public Employe Bargaining law, which is celebrating its thirty-fifth anniversary this year; and

WHEREAS, Al Fondy led the PFT in two other effective and successful strikes to reach contract settlements in 1971 and 1975. Since then, Pittsburgh has successfully gone thirty years without a strike by teachers or by any other PFT- represented personnel; and

WHEREAS, under Al Fondy's leadership, the PFT membership increased from 250 members in 1967 to more than 3900 members today; and

WHEREAS, in addition to his activities at the local level, Al Fondy wrote and spoke extensively on matters relating to public education, labor, government, and on behalf of working families, as well as needy citizens at the state and national levels; and

WHEREAS, over the span of 35 years, Al Fondy served on numerous local, state, and national commissions and task forces. He also was interviewed extensively by the newspaper and print media, and he wrote numerous articles and letters which were published in various newspapers, periodicals, and magazines.
