WHEREAS, the political, social and economic resurgence of Southwestern Pennsylvania is highly dependent upon our region's nonprofit sector; and
WHEREAS, the 2,674 financially active nonprofit organizations that operate in Southwestern Pennsylvania spend close to $12 billion annually on the well-being of our region's residents; and
WHEREAS, 89% of Pittsburgh's residents highly rate nonprofits for helping people, and 85% believe that nonprofit organizations effectively deliver programs and services; and
WHEREAS, on March 2 and 3, 2006, The Forbes Funds and The Pittsburgh Foundation will distribute approximately 13,000 copies of Greater Pittsburgh Community Threads, a publication celebrating our region's charitable community; and
WHEREAS, on March 7, 2006, the Pittsburgh Nonprofit Summit, under the auspices of Grantmakers of Western Pennsylvania, will convene 1,000 community leaders to identify priorities and set strategies for the Pittsburgh region's nonprofit sector as nonprofit organizations help to advance and lead our region's next renaissance; and
WHEREAS, the Greater Pittsburgh Nonprofit Partnership, under the auspices of The Forbes Funds, has connected approximately 250 nonprofit organizations that will work together with businesses and government to bring hope and progress to people and communities across Southwestern Pennsylvania.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh salutes both Pittsburgh's nonprofit community and the individual Pittsburghers who give to, lead and support charitable causes; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh declares March 2006 as a Month to Celebrate Charity.
