Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby welcome the 220th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church to the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the 220th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church will be held in Downtown Pittsburgh at the David Lawrence Convention Center from Saturday, June 30 until Saturday, July 7, with over 5000 Presbyterians expected to attend; and,
 
WHEREAS, the General Assembly consists of commissioners elected by presbyteries, and is charged with reviewing the work of synods, is responsible for matters of common concern for the whole church, and serves as a symbol of unity for the church; and,
 
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania is the home of Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, the oldest Presbyterian seminary in the denomination, and Western Pennsylvania has the highest concentration of Presbyterians in the nation, with currently 148 Presbyterian churches in Allegheny County; and,
 
WHEREAS, Presbyterians played a key role in forming institutions of higher education throughout the area such as University of Pittsburgh, Washington and Jefferson University, Grove City College, Westminster College and Waynesburg University, as well as playing a key role in the birthing of UPMC hospitals; and,
 
WHEREAS, the theme for this year's General Assembly is Walking, Running, Soaring in Hope, inspired by the passage in Isaiah 40:31 which reads "But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint";
