WHEREAS, the Honorable Justice Cynthia A. Baldwin, a trailblazer in the legal field and an exemplary leader in her community, is celebrating her 80th birthday, and it is fitting that we acknowledge her numerous contributions and celebrate her remarkable achievements; and,
WHEREAS, Justice Baldwin made history as the first African-American woman elected to the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas and only the third African-American and second African-American woman to serve on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, where she served with distinction until her retirement in 2008; and,
WHEREAS, a passionate advocate for education, Justice Baldwin's journey began as a teacher in the McKeesport Area School District, where she and her husband founded a not-for-profit counseling and tutoring service for underserved young people. She later obtained her law degree from Duquesne University School of Law, where she graduated on Law Review; and,
WHEREAS, Justice Baldwin's leadership extends to her service on numerous boards and organizations, including the Fulbright Association, the Association of Governing Boards of Colleges and Universities, Duquesne University, the Pittsburgh Urban League, the United Way, and the Pennsylvania State University Board of Trustees, where she was the first person of color and the first woman to serve as Chair; and,
WHEREAS, she has earned recognition for her dedication to improving her community and mentoring future generations, receiving numerous honors, including the ATHENA Award, the Heinz History Center History Maker Award, the Pennsylvania Bar Association's A. Leon Higginbotham Award, and the Women and Girls' Foundation's Art of Justice Award; and,
WHEREAS, Justice Baldwin continues to inspire others through her work as a mentor, speaker, and community leader, striving to make a positive difference both locally and globally, as exemplified by her work in Uganda and Zimbabwe, her involvement with the International Women's Forum, and her...
