WHEREAS, American Cancer Society is holding its Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk of Greater Pittsburgh on Saturday, October 15, 2016 at the Highmark Stadium at Station Square; and,
WHEREAS, this non-competitive, 3-5 mile walk represents the largest network of breast cancer survivors and those who have lost loved ones to breast cancer who share the determination to create a world free from the pain and suffering of breast cancer; and,
WHEREAS, participants raise funds to enable the American Cancer Society to fund innovative breast cancer research, provide free, comprehensive information and support to those touched by breast cancer and to help people reduce their breast cancer risk or find it early when it’s most treatable; and,
WHEREAS, in addition, the American Cancer Society helps people understand which screening tests they need and what steps they can take to help protect themselves from breast cancer by developing prevention and industry standard early detection guidelines; and,
WHEREAS, every day, the American Cancer Society helps to save 500 lives from this disease and we encourage Pittsburgh residents to make “strides against breast cancer” by walking on Saturday, October 15; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend the American Cancer Society for the tremendous work they do in educating the public about preventing breast cancer and supporting those touched by the disease; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, October 4, 2016 to be “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
