WHEREAS, when Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood made its national public television debut in 1968, Fred Rogers began each episode with his invitation in song, "Won't you be my neighbor?"; and,
WHEREAS, to celebrate his legacy of neighborliness, "Won't You Be My Neighbor?" Days was developed as a week-long series of family-friendly events from March 15-20, 2008, as part of the Pittsburgh 250 Celebration; and,
WHEREAS, more than 30 southwestern PA organizations are planning to show just how neighborly they can be through activities, presentations, events and exhibits offered at free or reduced prices to facilitate experiences that they will enjoy and which will enrich their lives in unexpected, remarkable ways; and,
WHEREAS, this concept was developed by Family Communications, Inc., the non-profit corporation founded by Fred Rogers, to honor his deep appreciation of what it means to be a caring neighbor. FCI , Inc. is partnering with Tickets for Kids to assure that deserving children and families are included in the activities taking place to commemorate Fred Rogers' enduring legacy; and,
WHEREAS, in honor of Fred Rogers' birthday, FCI, Inc. is asking everyone everywhere
from Pittsburgh to Paris
. to wear their favorite sweater on March 20.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize the 80th birthday of Fred Rogers on March 20, 2008, and honors our favorite hometown neighbor who became America's favorite neighbor ; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Thursday, March 20, 2008, to be "WON'T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR? DAY " in the City of Pittsburgh.
