WHEREAS, in 1920, the General Counsels' Association of the United States was established in 1920 to foster good will and cooperation among general counsel who shared common interests and challenges; and,
WHEREAS, by World War II, there were 2,000 members, each of whom was invited to join through an in-depth committee review process; and,
WHEREAS, in 1960, the organization created the Defense Research Institute to provide broad-based support and education for the defense bar and later founded Lawyers for Civil Justice; and,
WHEREAS, in 1985, the organization changed its name to the International Association of Defense Counsel (IADC) to reflect its core values and leading insight; and,
WHEREAS, today, the IADC's members include the world's leading corporate and insurance lawyers, corporate insurance executives, partners in large and small law firms, and senior counsel in corporate law departments; and,
WHEREAS, IADC's members handle cases in all jurisdictions and have been involved in many precedent-setting decisions and appeals. They have been appointed to federal and state judgeships, elected to numerous local, state, and federal government positions, and serve as leaders of hundreds of important legal, corporate, industry, and non-profit organizations; and,
WHEREAS, IADC provides its members with networking and educational events and opportunities to collaborate, build relationships, and influence change with an exclusive group of likeminded professionals; and,
WHEREAS, its activities benefit the approximately 2,500 invitation-only, peer reviewed members and their clients, as well as the civil justice system and the legal profession. In addition, the IADC takes a leadership role in many areas of legal reform, professional development, scholarship, and academic leadership; and,
