Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby acknowledges the Beechview Branch of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh for the 50th anniversary of its opening; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council hereby declares Saturday, October 8, 2017, "Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh-Beechview Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh was established in 1895 to serve the literacy and information needs of the residents of Pittsburgh; and,

 

WHEREAS, the Bookmobile Service began service to the neighborhood of Beechview in 1952, furthering the ability of the Carnegie library to serve the needs of residents; and,

 

WHEREAS, the City of Pittsburgh under the direction of Mayor Joseph M. Barr purchased property at 1910 Broadway Avenue in 1965 to build a neighborhood library for the Beechview community; and,

 

WHEREAS, a Groundbreaking Ceremony for a new branch of Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh was held on June 23, 1966; and,

 

WHEREAS, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh opened the doors of its seventeenth branch to serve the residents of Beechview and Banksville on June 24, 1967; and,

 

WHEREAS, an official Dedication event for the branch was held on October 19, 1967; and,

 

WHEREAS, the “Friends of the Beechview Library” was established in 1986 to support the objectives and customers of the Beechview Branch of Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh; and,

 

WHEREAS, the Beechview Branch temporarily closed for a major renovation and expansion on June 21, 2014; and,

 

WHEREAS, the newly enhanced Beechview Branch, reopened to the public on July 18, 2015; and,

 

WHEREAS, on this date, Saturday, October 7, 2017, the Beechview Branch of Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh celebrates 50 years of service to the neighborhoods and residents of Beechview and Banksville; and,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby acknowledges the Beechview Branch of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh for the 50th anniversary of its opening; and,

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council hereby declares Saturday, October 8, 2017, “Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh-Beechview Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
