WHEREAS, on July 26th 1990 President George H. W. Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) into law; and,
WHEREAS, the ADA is a comprehensive federal civil rights law which prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability in all public spaces, in our streets, and in the workplace; and,
WHEREAS, 2015 marks the 25th anniversary of this landmark bill, wherein Pittsburgh and Allegheny County will celebrate the historic civil rights legislation through a series of community-wide events and public awareness opportunities that highlight local accomplishments and next steps for our community; and
WHEREAS, the ADA has improved the livelihood and well-being of countless individuals and communities across our Nation and serves as a leading example of the type of progress that is possible when our communities, organizations, and leadership work together toward a common goal of inclusion and compassion; and,
WHEREAS, though the ADA has inspired much progress and accommodation for people with disabilities in its 25 years, there is still much work to be done to establish full equality in our city, region and nation; and,

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby acclaim and celebrate the milestone 25th anniversary of the ADA and thanks all of those who work every day towards its fullest implementation; and,
NOW THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, July 21st, 2015 to be ”Americans with Disabilities Act Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
