WHEREAS, the Negro Educational Emergency Drive, more commonly known as NEED, will celebrate 42 years of scholarship support to youth in the Pittsburgh area on Wednesday, March 16, 2005 at the Pittsburgh Hilton hotel; and
WHEREAS, NEED is a college access program that provides financial aid, counseling and internships; and
WHEREAS, since the program's inception, NEED has provided over 17,000 alumni with over $16 million in scholarship assistance; and
WHEREAS, still true to its mission, to help young African Americans aspire to, learn about, prepare for and complete higher education, the NEED vision has grown to provide a variety of programs and services beneficial to the entire community; and

NOWTHERFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Pittsburgh City Council salutes the Negro Education Emergency Drive for its vision to sustain the academic thirst of so many youth in their pursuit of higher education--a gift from NEED that improves the quality of life in the City Pittsburgh and beyond.
