WHEREAS, June is recognized as Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month, a time to increase understanding of Alzheimer's disease and support the Alzheimer's Association in its efforts to end Alzheimer's and all other dementias; and,
WHEREAS, the Alzheimer's Association Greater Pennsylvania Chapter uses this month to highlight the impact of this public health crisis and encourages communities to take action against dementia; and,
WHEREAS, more than 7 million Americans age 65 and older are living with Alzheimer's, including over 282,000 in Pennsylvania, with more than 470,000 Pennsylvanians serving as caregivers; and,
WHEREAS, nearly two-thirds of those living with Alzheimer's are women, and older Black Americans are about twice as likely to develop Alzheimer's or other dementias as their white counterparts; and,
WHEREAS, while there is currently no cure, two-thirds of Americans have at least one risk factor for dementia, and healthy lifestyle choices, such as staying mentally active, managing blood pressure, and exercising regularly, can help reduce the risk of cognitive decline; and,
WHEREAS, the Alzheimer's Association Greater Pennsylvania Chapter, along with the Greater Pittsburgh Health Equity Coalition and Allegheny County Community Action Network, invites the City of Pittsburgh to help raise awareness and encourage healthy habits that support brain health; and,
WHEREAS, community members are encouraged to learn more about health disparities and equity at the African American Summit on Dementia on June 17, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Commonwealth Charter Academy, and to participate in initiatives such as the Walk to End Alzheimer's and The Longest Day to support the fight against the disease; and,
