Title: NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare May 2, 2006 "Pittsburgh Symphony Day" in the City of Pittsburgh

Whereas, the Pittsburgh Symphony, founded in 1895 by the Pittsburgh Arts Society, is one of the premier cultural institutions in our great city; and
 
Whereas, the Pittsburgh Symphony has offered community outreach programs, children's concerts, great performers' series; and
 
Whereas, the Symphony is a proud ambassador for our city, traveling around the world for performances; and
 
Whereas, in 2004 the Symphony became the first orchestra to play for the pope, who requested an encore after the performance; and
 
Whereas, this year six of our most revered musicians will retire from the Symphony, including
 
      Richard DiAdamo, First Violin- Mr. DiAdamo accepted a position with the Symphony in 1968 under William Steinberg and has been a dedicated teacher in the community.
      Robert Hamrick, Trombone- Mr. Hamrick joined the Symphony in 1976 and four years later was appointed to the principal chair as well as serving as the orchestra's personnel manager. He has also served on the faculties of many local universities.
      Richard Holland, Viola- Mr. Holland joined the Symphony in 1972 in the Viola section and also served in the Air Force Band.
      Patricia Jennings, Principal Keyboard- She joined the Symphony in 1966 and in 1999 was named a distinguished daughter of Pennsylvania.
      James Krummenacher, Bass- He joined the Symphony in 1956 and was attracted to the special outpouring of emotion unique to the bass.
      Roger Sherman, Trumpet-He joined the Symphony in 1979 following a stint with the National Ballet of Canada. He also authored The Trumpeter's Handbook. He is also on the Board of Directors on the National Trumpet Guild.
