WHEREAS, The Midwife Center, opened in 1982 as "BirthPlace", was the first licensed, free-standing birth center in Pittsburgh; and
WHEREAS, since 1982 the Center has evolved and transformed into one of Pittsburgh's most valuable resources providing exceptional care for pregnancy, birth, and life-long wellbeing; and
WHEREAS, the Center's midwives provide more than just medical care, taking a holistic approach and serving their clients' physical, emotional, and spiritual needs; and
WHEREAS, the Center also provides community outreach programs, classes, and specialized services, including "Con Mujeres" a program designed to cater to the needs of Pittsburgh's growing latina population; and
WHEREAS, the Center has a proven track record of world-class care, beating national averages for their extraordinarily low number of C-sections, preterm births, and babies born with very low birth weights, all while providing this care at a quarter of the cost of the average hospital birth; and
WHEREAS, the Center is celebrating their 30th anniversary this year.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize The Midwife Center for their excellence in providing essential care to women around the region for the past 30 years; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare May 19, 2012 to be "The Midwife Center Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
