Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh, does hereby commend the Pittsburgh Chapter of the Susan G. Komen Cancer Foundation along with the National Council of Jewish Women, for their dedication and encouragement for women and their families in their fight against breast cancer.

Whereas, American Cancer Society has established October as Breast Cancer Awareness month; and,

 

Whereas, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, other than skin cancer. It is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer.  Two hundred and Three Thousand, Five hundred women were diagnosed with Breast Cancer in 2002 and About 39,800 women will die from the disease; and 

 

Whereas, the Susan G. Komen, Breast Cancer Foundation, was found in 1982 by Nancy Brinker to honor the memory of her sister, Susan G. Komen.  The Pittsburgh chapter helps survivors come together to share a bond of support; and,

 

Whereas, the Pittsburgh chapter of the Susan G. Komen, Breast Cancer Foundation was established in 1993 by the National Council of Jewish Women and Joanne Mier as the director of the chapter; and,

 

Whereas, many community service projects are supported by the National Council of Jewish Women, including the Pittsburgh Race for the Cure, which is the largest series of its kind presented in more than 100 cities in the United States; and,

 

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh, does hereby commend the Pittsburgh Chapter of the Susan G. Komen Cancer Foundation along with the National Council of Jewish Women, for their dedication and encouragement for women and their families in their fight against breast cancer.
