WHEREAS, in 2008, Pittsburgh will be celebrating its 250th anniversary; and,
WHEREAS, the completion of the Great Allegheny Passage in October will connect Pittsburgh, PA and Cumberland, MD through 150 miles of continuous bike trail; and,
WHEREAS, the PNC Legacy Bike Relay, sponsored by Pittsburgh 250 and Venture Outdoors, will commemorate this historic occasion with eighteen teams of six cyclist trailblazers to relay a proclamation from the US congress in Washington, DC to local and regional dignitaries in Pittsburgh, 335 miles in 24 hours on October 3rd and 4th; and,
WHEREAS, the relay will end with the PNC Legacy trail ride, uniting the bike community of Pittsburgh by riding from the Hot Metal Bridge to Point State Park for its grand reopening, kicking off a two month long celebration of the founding of the city; and,
WHEREAS, community participation in celebrating the completion of the trail as well as the founding of the city is an outstanding way to commemorate our city's history and promote bicycle safety awareness.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize PNC Bank, Pittsburgh 250 and Venture Outdoors for their outstanding work in promoting our region's bicycle and pedestrian trails;
AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City Pittsburgh declares October 4, 2008 to be "Trailblazer Day" in the city of Pittsburgh.
