Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby congratulate Rabbi Stephen E. Steindel for years of dedicated service, spiritual counsel, religious fulfillment and for influencing a generation of Jewish children and families; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare the weekend of June 5, 6 and 7, 2009, to be “RABBI STEPHEN E. STEINDEL TRIBUTE WEEKEND ” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Beth Shalom Congregation is a traditional, egalitarian conservative 90 year old Jewish congregation with a rich history located in Squirrel Hill ; and,
WHEREAS, Rabbi Stephen E. Steindel has been the senior spiritual leader of Beth Shalom Congregation for 23 years and will shortly leave his pulpit to move closer to his children and grandchildren on the East Coast ; and,
WHEREAS, Rabbi Stephen E. Steindel, a native of New York City, is a graduate of Columbia University, ordained at the Jewish Theological Seminary and was a recipient of an honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree from the JTS in 1998; and,
WHEREAS, Rabbi Stephen E. Steindel served Beth El Congregation in the South Hills for 10 years during which time he became the first Rabbi ever elected to the Board of the United Jewish Federation; and,
WHEREAS, Rabbi Stephen E. Steindel introduced a Rosh Hashona for Singles Service, has served as President of the Greater Pittsburgh Rabbinic Fellowship, served two terms as President of the Greater Pittsburgh Rabbinic Association , served on the UJA National Rabbinic Cabinet and the Chancellor's Council of the Jewish Theological Seminary He is on the Board of Community Day School, teaches at Catholic high schools as part of the Catholic Jewish Educational Enrichment Program and has led several trips to Israel; and,
WHEREAS, Rabbi Stephen E. Steindel and his wife, Lisa are the parents of Sara, Shiri,
Sivya and Avi and the grandparents of Boaz and Niv ; and,
