Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby congratulate Esther J. Bigger on the milestone of her 90th Birthday; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Friday, September 8, 2017, to be "Esther J. Bigger Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Esther Jane Bigger was born on September 8, 1927 and was the first of her 12 siblings to be born in a hospital; and,

 

WHEREAS, she has lived in different neighborhoods of the City of Pittsburgh all her life and finally landed in Sheraden where she attended Holy Innocents Elementary School and graduated from Langley High School in 1947; and,

 

WHEREAS, she joined the Navy in 1950 serving most of her four years at the Navy Yard in Charleston NC; she has worked for Koppers, Inc., Gimbles Department Store and the State of Pennsylvania; and,

 

WHEREAS, in 1956, she married the late Robert Bigger, a firefighter for the City of Pittsburgh and purchased a house on Ashlyn Street in Sheraden in 1957 where she currently resides; and,

 

WHEREAS, Esther and Robert have four daughters: Arlene Bigger, Lynn Bigger, Diane Powell, and Karen Seligman (David).  Esther has three grandchildren: Jessica Varrati (Freddie), Ryan Seligman (Rebecca) and Tyler Powell; and,

 

WHEREAS, Esther has always been involved with her community and her Parish, Holy Innocents, where she volunteered in the school cafeteria and chaperoned their Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) events.  She also volunteered for the Sheraden Meals on Wheels and the Sheraden Community Council for many years.  She loves gardening, traveling, and bowling; and,
