Title: NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend the Komen Pittsburgh Race® for the Cure and National Council of Jewish Women, Pittsburgh Section, for their significant contributions to the Pittsburgh Community; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, February 17, 2005 to be "Komen Pittsburgh Race for the Cure Day" here in the City of Pittsburgh.

      WHEREAS, the Komen Pittsburgh Race® for the Cure is a project of National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW,) Pittsburgh Section that benefits the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation; and,
 
      WHEREAS, NCJW volunteers and community leaders Pat Siger and Eileen Lane brought the idea to NCJW in 1992 and, with activist and breast cancer survivor Laurie Moser saw the project to fruition, obtaining approval from the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and staging the first race on Mother's Day 1993 with about 3,000 participants ; and,
 
      WHEREAS, through the unwavering dedication of Siger, Lane and Moser, NCJW, thousands of volunteers and scores of corporate sponsors and, of course, the runners, the race has grown to more than 30,000 participants and has raised more than $10 million dollars to fight this life threatening disease; and,
 
      WHEREAS, the race now belongs to the entire Pittsburgh community and will become an affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, so that the Komen Pittsburgh Race for the Cure® be conducted on Mother's Day May 8, 2005 will be the last one conducted under the NCJW auspices; and,
 
      WHEREAS, the May 8th Komen Pittsburgh Race for the Cure® will have its kick-off during a celebration on Thursday, February 17th at the Hard Rock Café, beginning at 7:00 PM.
