WHEREAS, The University School is a private college preparatory school located in Shadyside; and
WHEREAS, the school is celebrating their 100th anniversary this year, marking a century of providing unique educational opportunities to students grades 9 to 12 who plan to continue on to higher education; and
WHEREAS, The University School was founded in September of 1911 by Dr. J.B. Hench in order to provide Pittsburgh students with rigorous academic planning, personalized learning experiences, and one-on-one attention from professors; and
WHEREAS, in their 100 year history, the University School has educated thousands of students bound for college and successful careers and has remained a private, coeducational, nonsectarian, independent school; and
WHEREAS, the school currently serves about 20 students from the Pittsburgh region as well as foreign exchange students from around the world; and
WHEREAS, unique for a school of its size, The University School also provides special education opportunities to differently abled students through individualized curricula and an intimate, personal learning environment.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby celebrate the 100th anniversary of The University School; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare December 13, 2011 to be "The University School Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
