WHEREAS, the City of Pittsburgh and the City of Dortmund, Germany share a common past in the steel and industrial economies that forged both regions; and
WHEREAS, both regions seek a common future of peace and prosperity and have agreed to work cooperatively toward that goal under the auspices of The Pittsburgh-Dortmund 2001-2010 Cooperation; and
WHEREAS, both regions appreciate the benefits of the Pittsburgh region and the region of Dortmund and share those benefits through efforts of the City of Dortmund, the City of Pittsburgh, the Pittsburgh Regional Alliance, the Economic Development Corporation of North Rhine Westphalia and others; and
WHEREAS, by sharing a mission of cooperation, both regions desire to enhance economic development, nurture business ties, grow university and research contacts and encourage social relationships among the regions; and
WHEREAS, a delegation from the City of Dortmund and the Economic Development Corporation of North Rhine Westphalia will be visiting the Pittsburgh region during the week of November 10-17 of the year 2003; and
WHEREAS, the Dortmund/North Rhine Westphalia delegation visits on a mission of cooperation to explore the economic, business and research benefits that may be found in the formation of relationships with the Pittsburgh region.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby welcome our visitors from Dortmund/North Rhine Westphalia; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby proclaims the week of November 10, 2003 through November 17, 2003 as Dortmund-North Rhine Westphalia-Pittsburgh Regional Cooperation Week and calls upon citizens to celebrate this week in recognition of our friendship with and commitment to the Dortmund region.
