Title: Now, Therefore, be it resolved that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and commend Dr. James Simms for his commitment to the ministry, and his relentless dedication to our communities; and Be It Further Resolved, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby proclaim November 14, 2009, to be designated, “Dr. James Simms” day in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Dr. James Simms is a native of Richmond Virginia. He is the second of seven children born to the late Reverend Obadiah and Mary Simms. Dr. Simms earned his masters of divinity degree from the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary graduating Cum Laude. He also earned his Doctor of Ministry Degree from the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Simms has a diverse career serving in both the religious and public sector. His public service experience in local government spans a period of 27 years. He has served as Director in several departments in city government including: The Pittsburgh Commission on Human Relations, Pretrial Services and Public Housing Authority; and
 
WHEREAS, Dr. Simms is active on numerous boards and civic organizations among which are: Municipal Campaign-United Negro College Fund, Negro Emergency Educational Drive, Hill House Association, Dollar Energy Fund, Forbes Fund, Beginning with Books, Families and Youth 2000 and the National Forum for Black Public Administrators; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Simms made history by being elected the first African American elected Allegheny County Councilman of District 10.
