WHEREAS, Duquesne University finds that being involved in the life of the community is one important mark of an educated person in a democratic society; and
WHEREAS, Duquesne's Honors College provides a seminar called "Community and University". The course begins with an analysis of needs in the community around Duquesne, encourages students to consider implications for their different disciplines, and explores how universities can help solve important societal problems. Duquesne students undertake service-learning projects that both meet important community needs which undoubtedly contribute to their own academic growth; and
WHEREAS, this semester, the students chose the South Side Community for their project, but more specifically, the East Carson Street Business District. The students presented a plan, produced a budget, fundraised and implemented their cleanup project April 16, 2005; and
WHEREAS, the major intermediate and end products developed during this project focused on the aesthetic improvement of the South Side Community, it storefronts, and the interpersonal skills of the seminar participants. Change was brought forth through the creation of a more inviting atmosphere by removing trash and graffiti from the area as well as making windows more attractive and eye catching; and
WHEREAS, because of the diligent efforts from Duquesne University students Chris Baskwell, Audrey Bement, Sarah Boe, Catherine Bourg, Alaina Fairley, Jenn Gordon, Jill Laptosky, Kristen Massucci, Christine Mastrovito, Rachel Messick, Angela Metz, Jon Miller, Brendan Moran, Amanda Phillips, Megan Rupp, Becky Sabol, Sarah Stramat, Christie Williamson, and Stephanie Yeung with the support and efforts from the SSLDC, the South Side Chamber of Commerce, Cool Space Locator, the Historic Review Commission, and East Carson Street Businesses the project was a complete success.
