WHEREAS, Child Relief & You ("CRY") America is a non-profit organization that supports projects for underprivileged children in India and the United States; and
WHEREAS, CRY America believes that every child is entitled to the basic rights of survival, protection, development, and participation, those basic rights first having been enunciated in 1989 by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child; and
WHEREAS, the mission of CRY America is to enable people to take responsibility for the deprived child and to motivate them to take collective action on behalf of the child; and
WHEREAS, the core of CRY America is volunteer action through a team of more than 300 volunteers spread across 15 American cities, including Pittsburgh; and
WHEREAS, on July 30, 2006, the Pittsburgh chapter of CRY America will hold its major fundraising event, the Second Annual Festival in the Park, at Schenley Park; and
WHEREAS, the CRY Festival has evolved into an observance of the contributions added to our City by the local Indian/South Asian community; and
WHEREAS, Indian food will be served from 3:00 p.m. onward, the proceeds from which will be donated to CRY America; CRY's Adam MacGregor will present a DJ set featuring Bollywood, Bhangra and traditional Indian music; the band Chai Baba and the Carnatic music trio of Shankar Krish, Ravi and Ajit will play beginning at 5:30 p.m., and the evening will conclude with an open air showing of the movie, Gandhi.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh salutes CRY America for the volunteerism and charitable work it performs on behalf of the world's children.
