Whereas, On March 19, 2005, Ms. Connie Portis and Renaissance Publications will sponsor the 20th Annual Black Extravaganza and Trailblazer Awards ceremony; and
Whereas, the theme for this year's program is "Changing of the Guard". The honorary Chairpersons for the event are Mrs. Cecile M. Springer and Mr. Charles M. Powell; and
Whereas, Since 1986 Renaissance Publications has recognized African Americans who have worked tirelessly in their professions - opening doors for younger generations to follow. Those selected have made a positive impact in our community by enabling others to continue to achieve; and
Whereas, this year's 2005 black Trailblazers are recognized for their exemplary contributions within their fields. The honorees are Irvin E. Williams, Economic Development President Ebony Development; Maelene J. Myers, Community Development Executive Director East Liberty Development Corporation; Robert O. Agbede, Business, President and CEO, ATS Chester engineers; Elaine Effort, Media; Alex Wilson, Human Service Dir Shuman Juvenile Detention Center, Randy Brockington, Human Service Deputy Director ; Ophelia Cookie Coleman, Law Enforcement Retired Pittsburgh Police Officer; Robert Hill, Higher Education, Vice Chancler University of Pittsburgh; Brenda J. Gregg, Health Care Vice president Community Affairs Children's hospital; Frank E. Sessoms, MD., Medicine; and
Whereas, The recipients of the KDKA-TV Lift Up Awards are Margaret Larkins-Pettigrew, MD, UPMC Health System; Joseph Foster, National City Bank; Rev. Henry Billingsly, Oxford Development; Jerri Holts, Citizens Bank; Winifred Torbert, Pittsburgh Pirates, Richard Newell, PNC Bank; and
Whereas, This year a special award will be presented to the Emerging Trailblazers: Trini Massie, Donna Baxter-Hankins; , and Justin Strong.
