WHEREAS, for nearly 15 years, Steps to Independence has been immersed with helping children ages 2-21 who have motor disabilities solve the problems of daily living in order to ultimately live as independently as possible; and,
WHEREAS, Steps to Independence believes that motor disorders are learning disabilities, which is the theory behind Conductive Education developed in 1945 in Hungary by Dr. Andras Pet; whereby, they incorporate active learning in small groups focusing on building physical capabilities and social skills, all of which instills confidence and self-esteem in the lives of children resulting in an improved quality of life; and,
WHEREAS, for the past fourteen years, Steps to Independence has offered a summer camp and during the school year, offers an Early Childhood Program, a Mommy and Me Group and an After School Program; and,
WHEREAS, National Conductive Education Awareness Day is Thursday, February 21, 2013 and Steps to Independence is holding an Open House at their facility at 300 Cedar Ridge Drive from 10:30 AM to 1:00 PM for the purpose of making the community aware of the incredible opportunity for individuals to gain confidence, self-esteem, and mobility; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend Steps to Independence for the genuine work they do for children with motor disabilities and the hope they bring to families; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Thursday, February 21, 2013, to be "Conductive Education Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
