Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend the National Association of Town Watch and "National Night Out-America's Night Out Against Crime" for making our communities-locally and nationally-safer places to live; BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh declares Tuesday, August 4, 2009, to be "National Night Out-America's Night Out Against Crime" Day in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, The National Association of Town Watch (NATW) is a national non-profit organization dedicated to the development and promotion of organized, law enforcement-affiliated crime and drug prevention programs; and,
 
WHEREAS, NATW's annual "National Night Out" program, which is held on the first Tuesday each August, has been extraordinarily successful in promoting involvement in crime and drug prevention activities, strengthening police-community relations, and encouraging neighborhood camaraderie as part of the fight for safer streets; and,
 
WHEREAS, Since 1984, "National Night Out-America's Night Out Against Crime" has grown to involve over 34 million people from more than 10,000 communities, involving cities and law enforcement agencies from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canada and U.S. military bases around the world; and,
 
WHEREAS, along with the traditional porch-sitting and 'lights on' events, communities sponsor locally tailored events such as block parties, cookouts, parades, visits from law enforcement officials, rallies and marches; and,
 
WHEREAS, locally, many special National Night Out events have been planned around the City of Pittsburgh including the communities of Squirrel Hill, East Liberty and the Hill District, among others, to celebrate this important cause; and,
 
WHEREAS, "National Night Out" is a popular and effective vehicle for heightening awareness, enhancing police-community relations, and bolstering volunteer morale;
