WHEREAS, October 6, 2004 is a special day for the physician assistants around this state and throughout the country and will be celebrated as National Physician Assistant Day; and
WHEREAS, on this day in 1967, Dr. Eugene Stead started the first program at Duke University where the first physician assistant graduated, and today there are more than 50,000 physician assistants in the United States and over 3,000 in the Pennsylvania practice of medicine; and
WHEREAS, affordable, accessible and quality health care, is an important concern for the well being of all citizens of the City of Pittsburgh and throughout the region; and
WHEREAS, physician assistants are recognized as important members of the health care team working closely with their supervising physicians to enhance the quality of medical care in the City of Pittsburgh; and
WHEREAS, quality physician assistants are trained at the Masters level at Chatham College, a fully accredited Physician Assistant Studies Program, in the City of Pittsburgh; and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby recognizes and commends the physician assistants for the medical care they provide throughout the year; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh declares the week of October 3, 2004 through October 7, 2004 to be, "Physician Assistant Appreciation Week" in the City of Pittsburgh.
