WHEREAS, born on May 11, 1885 in Alexandria, Virginia, Lillian B. Dyer (d. November 22, 1943) attended public school and graduated from the Fifth Avenue High School in 1902; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Dyer dedicated much of her life to community service as a well baby nutritionist at Soho Community House, in which she taught new immigrant families how to feed their children; and
WHEREAS, a wonderful supporter of the servicemen in World War II, in which she sent books, supplies and fruitcakes for the duration of the war; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Dyer married Mr. Isaiah Charles and with him, had 10 children, along with a multitude of grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, she, along with her family, were one of the original families to gain funding, by mortgaging their home, organize and build Ebenezer Baptist Church on Wylie Avenue in the Hill District, since the opening of Ebenezer Baptist Church, Ms. Dyer had been a committed member of the church, where most of the family members, who remain in Pittsburgh, still attend and are active members.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of Pittsburgh does hereby wish to honor Mrs. Lillian B. Dyer-Charles at the 1st Charles Family Reunion, which will be celebrated on June 14, 2008, while additionally thanking her for all of her hard work and dedication to the improvement of our greater Pittsburgh community.
