WHEREAS, Valerie Sullivan was born to the late business advocate Orlando “Scats” Scatena and Norma Jean Borrelli Scatena and raised in the Bloomfield neighborhood of the City of Pittsburgh where she is a resident today; and

WHEREAS,  after graduating with a degree in Public Administration from University of Pittsburgh in 1982, Valerie was hired by the City of Pittsburgh in the Finance Department to work on the new PGH-40 tax returns; and,

 

WHEREAS, in March 1983, Valerie joined the Municipal Pension Fund Staff. She was promoted from a Clerical position to Accounting Clerk and then to Executive Secretary, a position she held since 1985; and,

 

WHEREAS,  Mrs. Sullivan has served under 7 mayors and has issued timely pension checks to 3,379 retirees over the past 40 years; and,

 

WHEREAS, in addition, she was instrumental in initializing and updating computer systems, co-authored several Member Handbooks, initiated and assisted with the pension website, insured office protocols are up to accounting standards, and streamlined and developed disability procedures; and,

 

WHEREAS,  Valerie married a fellow  Bloomfield resident, Robert "Sully" Sullivan in 1996. Together they have a son Robert Orlando Sullivan who graduated from the Pennsylvania State University in May, 2022 with a degree in Architectural Engineering; and,

 

WHEREAS, upon retiring, she hopes to have more time for house hunting, reading cookbooks and walking her Malshi dog, Buddy; and,

 

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and thank Valerie Sullivan for her years of service to the City of Pittsburgh; and,

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare, Tuesday, October 25, 2022 to be “Valerie Sullivan Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
