WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Baptist Church is the oldest black Baptist church in Western Pennsylvania and has served the residents of the North Side since 1850; and,
WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Baptist Church was established June 1st, 1850 as the First Colored Baptist Church of Allegheny City. The Church went through several names including Zion Baptist and Green Street Baptist before becoming Metropolitan Baptist Church; and,
WHEREAS, over the last 165 years Metropolitan Baptist has carried out and sustained their mission of “Taking the gospel of Jesus Christ to the lost and spiritually nurturing the found”; and,
WHEREAS, for the last 35 years, Rev. Dr. Lacy F. Richardson has led the Metropolitan Baptist Church into the 21st Century, providing stability in these changing times as well as continuing its service to the community; and,
WHEREAS, on Saturday, October 31st, 2015, the Metropolitan Baptist Church hosted their165th Anniversary banquet at the Green Tree Doubletree Hotel celebrating the history and legacy of the Church and will be having a special anniversary service on Sunday, November 8th; and,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and commend Metropolitan Baptist Church for serving the North Side’s black community for 165 years; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Sunday, November 8th, 2015 to be "Metropolitan Baptist Church Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
