Title: BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council hereby declares Sunday, September 28, 2014, “Carrick High School Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

BODY
WHEREAS, in 1922 the Borough of Carrick started the construction of Carrick High School, creating an anchor institution for the Pittsburgh community which would stand the test of time, and;

WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Carrick High School is a comprehensive neighborhood school offering academic programs at the Advanced Placement (AP), gifted (CAS), scholars (PSP), special education (PSE) and standard academic levels, and;

WHEREAS, the mission of Carrick High School is to ensure that all graduates are “Pittsburgh Promise-Ready” and prepared with a plan for school, work, or additional training, and Carrick High School offers magnet Business Technology and Health Technology programs, and;

WHEREAS, the dedicated faculty and staff of Carrick High School include several National Board Certified Teachers and Evaluators, who have educated generations of families, and;

WHEREAS, Carrick High School serves the Pittsburgh neighborhoods of: Allentown, Arlington, Beltzhoover, Bon Air, Carrick, Overbrook, Mt. Oliver (Pittsburgh Section), Southside Slopes and St. Clair, and;

WHEREAS, Carrick High School opened on September 24, 1924 with an enrollment of 635 students, graduating it's first class of 15 students in 1926, and;

WHEREAS, in May 1926 Carrick Borough voters approved an annexation referendum to join Carrick with the City of Pittsburgh, with the rallying cry “We are city folk,”; and,

WHEREAS, during World War II over 400 Carrick High School students left school early to join 1200 graduates serving in the U.S. armed forces from 1941 through 1945, fifty-seven of whom died during that war; and,

WHEREAS Carrick High School's athletic Raiders won five city football championships; nine consecutive track and field city championships from 1946 through 1954, seven Triadic Conference championships, and ten straight Girl's Volleyball city championships in the early 2000's; and,

WHEREAS, Carrick High School can boast of the accomplishments of many alumni, ...
