WHEREAS, the City of Pittsburgh commemorates the service provided by individuals who take time out of their daily lives to enrich children's imaginations and learning skills, and;

WHEREAS, Mike Nichols, lifetime resident of the City of Pittsburgh, has been volunteering to read to children across the city, devoting invaluable service to Pittsburgh Public Schools and encouraging literacy among our youth; and,
WHEREAS, Nichols has been reading to children for 30 years, first volunteering to read at Pittsburgh Arsenal in 1992, along with being heavily involved with a guest reader program used to bring members of the community into various Pittsburgh Public Schools to read to children; and,
WHEREAS, in addition to reading to children, Mr. Nichols also serves his community by being a member of the Take a Father to School Day Planning Committee along with transporting children to City Hall for various performances and to gain knowledge on city government; and,
WHEREAS, Nichols was a 1979 Pittsburgh Schenley graduate who continues to exhibit exceptional qualities of a role model to our children, serving Pittsburgh families with compassion, devotion, and great passion; and,
WHEREAS, Nichols has persevered through the loss of his son, conquering cancer, and recovering from COVID-19, remaining devoted to reading to children, thus showing his unwavering devotion to the City of Pittsburgh; and,
WHEREAS, Mike was employed by the City of Pittsburgh in the Department of Public Works, serving almost 30 years to the public; and,
WHEREAS, Mike is an esteemed model for community engagement, service, and compassion, to Pittsburgh Public Schools, the Department of Public Works, and many neighborhoods throughout the city, and;
WHEREAS, Mike has dedicated his life to the City of Pittsburgh through prosperous times and times of challenge, impacting the education and imaginations of children throughout the city in immeasurable ways; and,
