WHEREAS, Mark Clayton Southers is a young Pittsburgh accomplished Author of ten completed works for the stage and screen; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Southers recently became the proud recipient of the 2003 Columbia College Chicago's 18th Theodore Ward Prize for African American plays with his full-length drama "Ma Noah". The Theodore Ward Prize is named after the late Chicago playwright who influenced the intellectual and cultural life of the African American community. The award is given to encourage black playwrights in development of scripts and offers an opportunity for emerging and established playwrights to be exposed to professional theatre; and
WHEREAS, Mark Southers is an actor of stage and film, appearing in plays as far away as South Africa, as well as televisions The Young and Restless, several movies; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Southers is also an award winning photographer, he was the chief photographer at the New Pittsburgh Courier Newspaper for twelve years. His photography work has appeared in publications including Jet Magazine. His prints are in the permanent collections of the Cleveland AA Museum and the Ukraine Museum.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council in the City of Pittsburgh recognize and commend Mr. Mark Clayton Southers for his outstanding contributions to the Arts and for keeping it in Pittsburgh;
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council in the City of Pittsburgh declares, Tuesday, February 10, 2004, "Mark Clayton Southers Day."
