WHEREAS, Robert Santee Allen was born to Ashton and Mattie Allen in Mifflin Township, currently the 31st Ward of Pittsburgh, on September 10, 1926 and attended Hays Elementary School and Gladstone Junior High; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Allen attended Conley Vocational Institute where he learned the trades of bricklaying and carpentry; determined to further educate himself, he read books in the areas of history, geography and demographics and is often referred to as a “walking almanac” or “atlas” ; and,
WHEREAS, after serving his country in World War II, he began a long career with Bethlehem Steel, where he earned tremendous respect and experienced great success because of his strong work ethic, integrity and skill and became the company's first African-American assistant foreman; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Allen married the late Corrine Davis in 1947, and raised five children together in the house that he built; his daughter Cheryl serves as a judge in Pennsylvania's Superior Court, daughter Claudia, now retired, held the position of chief financial officer of the Port Authority of Pittsburgh, Denise is an administrative assistant, the late Bernadine was a social worker and therapist, and his son Bob is a television reporter with KDKA, Channel 2; he is also the proud grandfather of six grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren and is loved and respected by his numerous nephews and nieces; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Allen became active in the civil rights movement long before it became fashionable and continues to remain a steadfast community activist and civic leader; he is a member of the Win-Char Civic Association, a member of the West End Alliance, a committee member in the 20th Ward Democratic Committee, and an active member of American Legion Post 30; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby honor Mr. Robert Allen, Sr. for his dedication to his family, community, and country; and,
