WHEREAS, Pittsburgh’s long history of labor power and industrial development continues to inspire those working, living, and making art in the city, including those at Industrial Arts Workshop, who partner workforce development with art making; and,

WHEREAS, the Hazelwood neighborhood of Pittsburgh prioritizes artistic expression, community engagement, and hopes for the future. Hazelwood hosts Industrial Arts Workshops’ student artists and welders and is the home for their newest artwork; and,
WHEREAS, through the support of the Hazelwood Initiative, Arts Excursions Unlimited, and Hazelwood neighbors, the new artwork “Braids of Hope” was completed on the Elevationz building at Tecumseh and Second Avenues; and,
WHEREAS, Industrial Arts Workshop empowers Pittsburgh-area youth and adults at the intersection of arts, community development, and workforce readiness through sculpture design and welding during its core programs of Summer Welding Bootcamp and After-School Welding Labs; and,
WHEREAS, Industrial Arts Workshop’s 2023 Summer Welding Bootcamp students met three days a
week for 6 hours to learn to weld; visit arts, trades, and educational institutions in the area; and create the “Braids of Hope” artwork; and,
WHEREAS, Industrial Arts Workshop will celebrate the completion of Summer Welding Bootcamp, the installation of “Braids of Hope” and the hard work of students on October 13th, 2023, with family friends, Hazelwood neighbors, and other supporters.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize Industrial Arts Workshop’s 2023 Summer Welding Bootcamp Students’ dedication and commitment to developing their skills and creating vibrant artwork for the Hazelwood community; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Friday, October 13, 2023, to be “Industrial Arts Workshop Student Artists Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
