WHEREAS, Since it's founding on December 4, 1906, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. has supplied voice and vision to the struggle of African-Americans and people of color around the world. Alpha Phi Alpha, the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African-Americans, was founded at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York by seven college men who recognized the need for a strong bond of brotherhood among African descendents in this country; and,
WHEREAS, The Fraternity initially served as a study and support group for minority students who faced racial prejudice, both educationally and socially, at Cornell. The early leaders of the now internationally recognized fraternity succeeded in laying a firm foundation for Alpha Phi Alpha, by creating principles of scholarship, fellowship, good character, and the uplifting of humanity; and,
WHEREAS, Members of the prominent African-American society known as Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. have long uplifted humanity for the betterment of all citizens. A few members that bear the sacred name of Alpha Phi Alpha are Martin Luther King, Jr., former Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, W.E.B. Dubois, Jesse Owens, Ambassador Raphael Lanier, Cornel West, John H. Johnson, Duke Ellington, Hill Harper, Julius Chambers, Dick Gregory, Marc Morial, first black Mayor of Atlanta Maynard Jackson, first black Mayor of New York City David Dinkins, and Pittsburghers Max Starx, Jake Milliones, Robert L. Vann, Byrd Brown, Wendell Freeland, Homer S. Brown, and Bishop Charles Foggie, just to name a few; and,
WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania Association of Alpha Chapters convened their statewide meeting in the “most livable city”, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on November 12 through November 14, 2010.
