Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize the Obey House Tavern and its longevity; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare, Tuesday, October 1, 2024 to be "Obey House Tavern Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the Obey House, as it is known today, was built in 1823 by John Obey. It is among the oldest tavern in or around Pittsburgh. At the time it was built, the area was considered Chartiers Township and was annexed to the City of Pittsburgh in 1921 and is located in the Crafton Heights neighborhood; and,

 

WHEREAS, the inn was originally built to accommodate weary travelers on horseback and wagon and many great herds of cattle also passed by on their way farther West.  Many famous men have enjoyed the hospitality there such as Andrew Jackson, Sam Houston and Henry Clay, who has been reported as playing the fiddle and dancing during his stay; and,

 

WHEREAS, in 1932, a judge ordered a padlocking injunction for one year against the Obey House after a raid was conducted in June of that year; and,

 

WHEREAS, the Obey House Tavern is a prime historical example of a “road house” and has literally been a neighborhood bar for over 200 years; and,

 

WHEREAS, today, the 7th owners of the Obey House Tavern, Mark Cupp and his wife Chris Allen, continue the hospitality, good food and live music for which the inn was known; and,
