Title: NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, the City Council of the City of Pittsburgh recognizes Bike Pittsburgh's organization of and sponsorship of Bike to Work Week; and, BE FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare the week of May 15-19th 2006, to be BIKE TO WORK WEEK in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Bike Pittsburgh is a group of concerned bicyclists founded in 2002 to establish Pittsburgh as a city that is increasingly safe, accessible and friendly to bicycle transportation; and,
 
WHEREAS, Bike Pittsburgh is a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing awareness of bicycling and the safety of bicyclists in the City of Pittsburgh; and,
 
WHEREAS, Bike Pittsburgh strives to promote Pittsburgh as a bicycling community, represents the interest of bicyclists, endorses the bicycle as a viable, economical and desirable mode of transportation, educates motorists and bicyclists on road safety, assists local agencies in establishing bike-friendly policies and strengthens ties amongst community development corporations, businesses, government agencies and the bicycling community; and,
 
WHEREAS, Bike to Work Week is a national event in the United States and will be observed in the City of Pittsburgh from May 15-19, 2006, to promote bicycling as a healthy and economical form of transportation to the workplace, to demonstrate a nonpolluting transportation option and, to celebrate those who bicycle commute throughout the year, most specifically those urban commuters who live in the City of Pittsburgh and commute to work in the city limits.
