WHEREAS, HealthSouth Harmarville is a world class health and rehabilitation center that provides quality care for families in the City of Pittsburgh and throughout Western Pennsylvania; and,
WHEREAS, HealthSouth Harmarville began as the Convalescent Home for Women in 1913, and helped to improve the lives of poor and working class women by providing a safe haven for low income and unwed mothers to recover after childbirth or surgery. Due to the changing needs of Western Pennsylvania, the Home later transitioned into a rehabilitation facility in 1954 and was renamed Harmarville Rehabilitation Center, and later HealthSouth Harmarville; and,
WHEREAS, HealthSouth Harmarville was home to Dr. J. Edward Ricketts and Dr. Rex Newton-both of whom would become known as the "fathers" of rehabilitation in Pittsburgh for their extraordinary work in the field; and,
WHEREAS, HealthSouth Harmarville specializes in continuing recovery following an injury, illness, or surgery, offering both in-patient and out-patient services to ensure full rehabilitation and recovery; and,
WHEREAS, this year, HealthSouth Harmarville will be celebrating 60th anniversary, making it one of the oldest providers in our region; and,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and congratulate HealthSouth Harmarville for providing outstanding services to Western Pennsylvania residents for the past 60 years; and,

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, September 9, 2014 to be "Health South Harmarville Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
