WHEREAS, volunteers who have stepped out of their familiar environments to meet needs not otherwise met through their service are a fundamental part of the community. Nabhi Christian Ministries, whose mission is to enhance impoverished communities by creating healthy environments that mentor, train and develop citizens of all ages recognizes the work and sacrifices of Dr. Larry E. Davis with their Lifetime Achievement Award; and,
WHEREAS, Dr. Larry E. Davis, a native of Saginaw, MI, and a resident of Pittsburgh since 2001, is a leading scholar of the narrative about race in America and its role in social justice. The author of eight books and dozens of academic papers, Dr. Davis is the Dean of the University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work, the Donald M. Henderson Professor, the founding director of Pitt’s Center on Race and Social Problems and the founder and leader of REAP, a consortium of Race, Ethnicity and Poverty centers across the United States. Influenced by his Vista Volunteer work in New York City from 1969-1972, Dr. Davis has devoted his life and career to social service, social justice and to the creation of solution based dialogues that promote a more racially equitable society; and,
WHEREAS, Dr. Davis is married to Kim Armstrong and has three sons. He serves on the Heinz Endowments Advisory Board on African American Men and Boys, the Jail Collaborative Civic Advisory Committee, the Steering Committee for the Institute for Research, Education and Training in Addictions and the Equity Advisory Panel for Pittsburgh Public Schools as well as other affiliations in the field of Social Work; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize, commend and congratulate Dr. Larry E. Davis for receiving the NCM Lifetime Achievement Award for his extraordinary body of work as an exemplary professional, a dedicated role model in the service of his community.
