Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh encourages everyone in the City to stop what they are doing at 10:15AM to spend the next 15 minutes reading a newspaper, book, magazine or other material of their choosing. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that March 2, 2004 be hereby declared Literacy Day in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Board of Education has designated Literacy as a top priority in the City of Pittsburgh; and
 
WHEREAS, the District's goal is that all children learn to read by the end of third grade; and
 
WHEREAS, the School District is asking all parents and other stakeholders to demonstrate their commitment to literacy by acknowledging the importance of literacy and learning in their daily lives; and
 
WHEREAS, March 2nd is celebrated as the anniversary of the birth of Dr. Seuss, one of the nation's foremost authors of children's literature; and
 
WHEREAS, all schools in the City of Pittsburgh are planning special literacy activities on Tuesday, March 2nd in celebration of Dr. Seuss's 100th birthday; and
 
WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh School District is designating March 2nd, from 10:15 to 10:30AM as "Drop Everything and Read" time.
