WHEREAS, established as a public trust in 1895, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh serves the citizens of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County with a distinguished history of leadership among the country's great public libraries; and
WHEREAS, the Woods Run Library was originally built as a branch of the Carnegie Free Library of Allegheny. Ground was broken on March 15, 1963 for a new building at 1201 Woods Run Avenue, where it continues to serve the citizens of Marshall/Shadeland, Woods Run and Brighton Heights communities; and
WHEREAS, Woods Run is a central library for commuters passing through from northern neighborhoods to workplaces in downtown Pittsburgh; and
WHEREAS, in order to serve the growing needs of the community, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh announced plans in 2005 to begin renovations on its Woods Run location. To accommodate the extensive renovation, the facility temporarily closed on Wednesday, December 7, 2005 to accommodate the eight month construction plan. Prior to the renovation, Woods Run was one of the busiest locations among the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh system, serving over 40,000 visitors in 2005; and
WHEREAS, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh-Woods Run celebrates its grand re-opening on August 5th, 2006 with a new, distinctive look. Brick walls have been removed in favor of large windows that transform the library's exterior and infuse the library with sunlight, making it more welcoming. There are new teen and children areas, an interior design that showcases a centralized customer service area and the first drive-through book drop in the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh's system. The renovations have also allowed the library to go wireless; and
WHEREAS, in compliance with the US Green Building Council's LEEDâ„¢ (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Building Rating System, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh-Woods Run was renovated in par with Green Building Standards.
