Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend the Little Sisters of the Poor for 140 years of outstanding service for the City of Pittsburgh and for all their achievements as the group continues to be recognized and praised for their dedication to the elderly poor in Southwestern Pennsylvania ; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, May 29, 2012, to be "Little Sisters of the Poor Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, The Little Sisters of the Poor, originally founded in France in 1839, established the Pittsburgh Home on the North Side in 1872 and is proudly celebrating their 140th year anniversary of serving the elderly of the City of Pittsburgh; and,
 
WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Home of the Little Sisters of the Poor is situated on nearly 10 acres of land and welcomes 93 elderly families; all of whom are considered to be members of extended family; and,
 
WHEREAS, the Little Sisters of the Poor care for the elderly poor in 200 homes throughout the world, including 30 in the United States where admission is not strictly "first come, first serve," but is given exclusively to the elderly poor regardless of race, religion, or nationality and to those who lack the resources to afford long term care elsewhere; and,
 
WHEREAS, the Sister's fourth vow-hospitality-ensures that all residents' nutritional, medical, social, and spiritual needs are met through a variety of in-house services and activities; and,    
 
WHEREAS, in 2010, the Pittsburgh Home was one of the only twelve nursing homes statewide to receive the "Excellence in Quality Care Award" from the Pennsylvania Department of Aging and recently was named one of the top 39 nursing homes in the nation by US News & World Report for having four straight quarters of perfect five star ratings from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services; and,
